Where Does the Public Option Stand in the Senate?
It seems the prospects for the public option have brightened somewhat in the last few days. Nancy Pelosi has declared that there will be a robust public option in the merged bill that comes out of the House, but where do things stand in the Senate? Kayser Health News offers this summary of the action in the last couple of days. The Washington Independent offers a scorecard on where individual Senators stand on the public option. It shows 47 likely in favor, 14 on the fence, and 39 likely opponents. You can see the Washington Independent's scorecard here. Meanwhile Politico quotes ABC's Jonathan Carl that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is intending to include a public option because he has the 60 Democratic votes he needs to shut off a Republican filibuster; you can read more here.
