Abortion Amendment Passes; Republican Substitute Bill Fails

The Stupak amendment passed 240 to 144, with 64 Democrats voting in favor. The amendment forbids the use of federal funds for abortion services. The amendment was part of a deal cut by anti-abortion rights democrats and Speaker Pelosi last night.

The Republican alternative bill was rejected by a vote of 259 to 176. Tim Johnson of Illinois was the lone Republican to vote against the Republican bill.
