President Casts Health Care Reform as "Core Ethical and Moral Obligation"

Speaking to sympathetic religious leaders by phone today, President Obama cast the health care debate in a moral tone. He accused opponents of "bearing false witness" about the his proposals; he termed the "death panels" allegation an "extraordinary lie." He said the plans do not cover illegal immigrants, as some detractors claim, and denied aiming for a government takeover of health care. The President said,
"These are all fabrications that have been put out there in order to discourage people from meeting what I consider to be a core ethical and moral obligation."
